
Hildegarde Hawthorne is the daughter of Julian Hawthorne and granddaughter of Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne. She wrote at least 26 books ranging from biographies to travel narratives.
Hildegarde's began selling articles to St. Nicholas Magazine at 16 years old. Among her best-known books was The Romantic Rebel, a biography of her grandfather, Nathaniel based on family gossip, his diaries, and his letters. Hildegarde died in 1952 at the age of 81.
