A historian specializing in American foreign policy, Alexander DeConde earned his B.A. from San Francisco State College and his M.A. and Ph.D from Stanford University. He taught at Stanford, Whittier College, and Duke University. From 1957 to 1961, he was professor of history at the University of Michigan. He subsequently joined the history department at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he remained until his retirement in 1991.
