Stitou werd geboren in Marokko, maar groeide op in Lelystad. In 1993 ging hij geschiedenis en filosofie studeren in Amsterdam. Dankzij Remco Campert stond Stitou in 1994 op Poetry International. In datzelfde jaar werd zijn debuutbundel Mijn vormen genomineerd voor de C. Buddingh'-prijs. Op uitnodiging van het Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei schreef hij in 1999 een gedicht dat op 4 mei werd voorgedragen.

In 2003 schreef hij teksten voor de Filmmuseum Biënnale. Hij won in 2004 de prestigieuze VSB Poëzieprijs voor zijn derde bundel Varkensroze ansichten. Op het Gedichtenbal 2009 werd bekendgemaakt dat Stitou de nieuwe Stadsdichter van Amsterdam werd als opvolger van Robert Anker. Dit was hij tot 18 mei 2010, Frank Starik nam daarna het stokje over.

Published his first collection "My forms" in 1994, at the age of nineteen. IN 1998 "My poems" followed and two years later both collections were published in one single volume. His third collection "Ping-Pink Picture Postcards (2003) was awarded both the VSB Poetry Prize and the Jan Campert Prize. A silence of ten years followed, after which "Temple" (2013) finally appeared, causing an enthusiastic stir among Dutch readers and critics alike.

In all of his collections Stitou presents Eastern and Western values and modes of thought as being on conflict, but he does so in an unpredictable fashion. He creates a medley of the high and low and of different cultures that gives rise to a vibrant tension, while also provoking urgent questions-for instance about identity, which is one of Stitou´s most important subjects.

Emotion and intellect enter into a rare bond in Stitous voice. He tacks easily between reality and imagination, irony and commitment, humor and seriousness, with all their ambiguities, invariably wrapped in dazzling forms. He is also an excellent reciter and performs at literary events and festival worldwide. He has been published in anthologies and magazines in Argentina, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Slovenia, among others,
