Jean-Claude is the author of five historical novels for young adults. He writes in his native Dutch and his novels have been widely translated. He describes history through his young, often defiant female protagonists and their struggle to make their way in the world. Jonkvrouw (A Sword in her Hand) is set in the late Middle Ages and deals with young Marguerite who is at odds with her father, the count of Flanders. In Galgenmeid (Gallows Maiden), set in the 16th century, cutpurse Nita Nomansdaughter is recruited as a spy for the Dutch duke of Orange. In IJzerkop ( Ironhead, or, Once a Young Lady), a young woman escapes her unwanted marriage by becoming a soldier in Napoleon's army. In Onheilsdochter (Daughter of Doom), two adolescents, a Danish girl and a Flemish nun, stand up to the wrath of the Vikings. Jean-Claude's novels have won awards in his native Belgium, in the Netherlands, Italy and Austria. His latest novel Properzia introduces readers to the first woman sculptor of the Italian renaissance. A true story, almost...
