David Ross Locke (1833-1888) sometimes wrote as Petroleum Vesuvius Nasby, a caricature of his political opponents, a fictional Copperhead pastor, postmaster, and sympathizer of the Democratic Party.
From secession onward, Nasby championed but but little actively helped the cause of the Confederate States of America.
Conscripted into the Army of the Union, he deserted to the Confederates and joined the "pelican brigade." He, however, found life in the Confederate army "tite nippin" and quickly deserted again. He lived as a civilian again before the end of the Civil War .
A supreme opportunist, bigoted, work-shy, often half-drunk, he willingly said anything to get job as a postmaster.
