American Communist politician and author.

Cochran became active in Trotskyist movement in the 1930s. In 1938 he became a member of the Socialist Workers Party.

In the beginning of the 1950s, Bert Cochran became the leader of a faction inside the SWP that opposed the leadership of Cannon and instead favoured the approach of Michel Pablo, which meant entryism in towards the Communist Party.

In 1954 he was expelled from the SWP and formed the American Socialist Union which existed until 1959.

His 1977 book Labor and Communism: The Conflict that Shaped American Unions was nominated for the Pullitzer price.
