More Details

Jan van Eyck and Albrecht Dürer were two titans in a pivotal
century in the history of western art. For several generations,
the Flemish Primitives inspired artists from the Holy Roman
Empire and influenced the course of artistic development in
Europe to a degree rivaled only by the innovations of the
Italian Renaissance.

This ambitious publication represents the first systematic
examination of the cultural interaction between the Burgundian
Netherlands and its neighbors to the North and East. In addition
to well-known (and less well-known) works by Flemish artists
such as Van Eyck, Campin, Van der Weyden, and Memling,
the book also includes masterpieces by Dürer, Holbein, and
Altdorfer as well as artistic gems by less celebrated painters
from Germany, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland,
and Estonia. A selection of sculptures, illuminated manuscripts,
and prints is also included. Published to accompany
an exhibition at the
Groeninge Museum
in Bruges.
