Created by the Ajax Historical Board, the authors had to rely extensively on personal recollections of individuals who were at the centre of key events in Ajax's short but enriched history. In this sense, this book resembles an oral history.
The beginnings of the town lie in the heart of World War II - a munitions plant was needed to support the efforts of our British allies. A stretch of farmland less than an hours drive from Toronto immediately east of the City of Pickering was chosen for its proximity to Toronto, Lake Ontario, and the rail lines. In 1941 Defense Industries Limited (D.I.L) was created and at peak production had 9 000 employees. This was just the beginning of Ajax.
This book brings us from the D.I.L. plant, to the University of Toronto Ajax Division Days, the first Town Council, major instries, schools, the library, and other notable events, people, and places in Ajax's proud history.
