Paula Gately Tillman's Fringe features black and white darkroom photography that gives a rare and often never-before-seen glimpse into fashion, drag and music scenes, as well as the underground subcultures of New York and Atlanta from 1984 to 1997. Photo subjects include the American Music Show, Dick Richards, Tish and Snooky Bellomo (Manic Panic), Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey (World of Wonder), Michael Musto (Village Voice), Brant Mewborn (Rolling Stone), Phoebe Legere (off broadway performer), John Kelly (performance artist), and Nelson Sullivan, in addition to legendary drag performers such as RuPaul, Jayne County, Lady Bunny, Joey Arias —and others. Fringe was printed as a limited edition of 550 books and 200 of which are part of a special artist edition, which also includes the companion book Nostalgia and a signed photo print. Andrew Walters and Jenny Romei Gately Tillman is a photographer from Baltimore, Maryland. Her photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the permanent collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Downtown Collection at New York University’s Fales Library, and the LGBT Collection in the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library at Emory University. Paula studied photography in Aspen, Colorado, and later moved to New York in 1984 where she met Brant Mewborn, then senior editor of Rolling Stone, who introduced her to the various personalities that she would later photograph. Gately Tillman is the widow of LeRoy E. Hoffberger, attorney, art collector, author, and philanthropist. She currently lives and works in Baltimore.
