More Details
Self-published work written by a curious Kansan looking to explain the origins of the universe. Campbell was a teacher, lawyer, judge and Kansas state senator, born in Yates County, New York. Campbell's book was expanded in a subsequent edition published in 1902. Inexplicably, this latter edition was reprinted by Sampson, Low & Co., in London where sales were anemic. A sarcastic reviewer in The Westminster Review (1902) is derisive of Campbell's work, such as its "tramp comets" and narration of self-preserving mammoths spontaneously forming a pyramid, as each sought to seek higher elevation, the strong climbing on the backs of the weak, before all perished in a flood. "It must have been a touching spectacle, this leap-frog game of mammoths extending over thousands of miles."
