In 14th century England, a loosely united group of men and families live in the forest. Young Hugh Fletcher wins the leadership of the band in combat with the former chief and organizes it into a well-disciplined unit, loyal, fearless, and respected (but still horse thieves). A daring rescue of two comrades from the castle of a cruel lord, the making of a perfect bow, the winning of a marksmanship contest at the fair all move toward the moment of decision for the restless Hugh, who, having never lived outside the forest, joins the war against France and leads his bowmen across the Channel. The battle at Crecy is won by the power of their long-bow, used for the first time in war.
