Shansheng and Qingzhao travel to a remote Tibetan village where Shansheng’s boyhood friend teaches. The lives of the characters emerge in flashback: he a highly successful professional but city-sick, she a sufferer of a similar ailment. As the novel progresses, Shansheng and Qingzhao try to define their lives outside of the stifling conventions of modern Chinese society.
