More Details

Allard Kenneth Lowenstein (1/16/29–3/14/80) was a liberal Democrat, a congressman representing the 5th District in Nassau County, NY (1969-71). His civil rights & antiwar work has been cited as an inspiration by figures including Congressmen John Kerry, Donald W. Riegle Jr & Barney Frank, columnist Wm F. Buckley Jr, actor Warren Beatty, Obama White House Counsel Gregory Craig & songwriters Peter Yarrow & Harry Chapin. He was a graduate of the University of N. Carolina. He was president of the Nat'l Student Ass'n & the Dialectic Society as an undergraduate. He earned a JD from Yale Law School in '54. Along with Curtis Gans in '67, later joined by Wisconsin's Midge Miller, he started the Dump Johnson movement, approaching Rbt F. Kennedy & Geo McGovern about challenging LBJ in the 68 primaries. RFK & McGovern both declined. A Democratic Nat'l Convention delegate, Lowenstein recruited Eugene McCarthy, whose candidacy he remained loyal to even after RFK's entry into the race. LBJ's withdrawal has been attributed to the impact of the Dump Johnson movement, culminating in the historical precedent of McCarthy's strong showing in the New Hampshire Primary. In '71, Lowenstein became head of the Americans for Democratic Action & spearheaded the Dump Nixon movement, earning himself the number 7 spot on Nixon's Enemies List. President Carter appointed him as Representative to the UN Commission on Human Rights & thus head the delegation to the 33rd regular annual session of the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland. He served with the rank of ambassador from 8/77 to 6/78 in the capacity of alternate US Representative for Special Political Affairs to the UN.
