Everything that might deflect him from his goal was sacrificed to the struggle and everything - literature, dreams, music - was in his painting. Both his contemporaries and his successors - among them Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse and Kandinsky - regarded him as an innovator of genius.
The South Seas finally gave him the inspiration he had eagerly sought for so long. He left Europe in 1895 and between then and his death in 1903 painted a primitive and European art. "Here, near my cabin," he wrote from Hiva-Hoa, "in complete silence, amid intoxicating perfumes, I dream of violent harmonies..."
