The Sagas of the Icelanders describe the lives and feuds of individuals and families between A.D. 930 and A.D. 1030 and were first written down during the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Professor Gwyn Jones has chosen the nine sagas in this volume for their excellence and variety from among the shorter of these Family Sagas which, as he says in his introduction, 'are the very heart-strand of the native literature of medieval Iceland' and are also 'part of the heroic literature of the Germanic peoples'. His eloquent and poetic translations give the sagas new life and should bring them many new readers.
