Walter Colby was a rancher and farmer, not an expert on giant arachnids whose behavior patterns confounded Diane Ashley, a recognized scientist. How then could Colby even begin to suspect anything about the altered nesting habits of these creatures that had invaded his property and ravaged his livestock? How could he know that even as he stood there battalions of spiders were scurrying to safety down tunnels, making their way through a maze-like network of passageways beneath the sandy Arizona soil. At that very moment, before the flames had completely died down, trapdoors were springing open just beyond Colby's line of sight, and spiders were crawling out--thousands upon thousands of them--their venomous jaws working back and forth, their appetites growing by the hour.
