More Details
A doctoral dissertation which refutes a former diagnosis known as "windigo psychosis", and presents an explanation of Algonkian windigo mythology based on Euthenasia by northern Algonkians in the face of cultural disruptions caused by European Immigrants. This thesis explores the movement of Algonkian peoples in response to the fur trade, the disruption of their food supply by the fur trade, and the efforts of the European Americans, specifically the Hudson Bay Company to stop migration in search of food. This is a well thought and plausible theory. It is also a very sad story.
