She struggles, coping with a severely disabled son and the reappearance in her life of her errant husband, Alain seeking forgiveness and a new start doesn't help. A young bouquiniste, Mathieu owes money to a violent loan shark and sees no way of repaying him. Fate brings these characters together as Alain and Mathieu become rivals for Anna. Both struggle with addiction, seeing in Anna a woman who can make them better men. Victor has been concealing something that could help everyone with their money troubles but he demands a high price leading to a climax where Mathieu and Alain must finally and perhaps murderously resolve which is to win Anna.
