Lord Birdwood fought with Bengal Lancers in India and during the Boer War (1899-1902) . After serving on Lord Kitchener's staff, he became commander of the Anzac Corps at Gallipoli. Following the evacuation there, he went to France with the Anzacs and was engaged at Amiens and Passchendaele. He commanded the 5th Army during the March Retreat in 1918. Birdwood was active in the post-war years, being promoted to Field Marshal in March 1925 and made Commander-in-Chief in India (1925-1930). Birdwood served as a colonel of the Blues during the inter-war period and accepted the Honorary Colonelcy of the 75th Anti-Aircraft Cinque Ports Regiment (R.A.). His diplomatic duties included representing Great Britain at the funeral of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. He was Master of Peterhouse College of Cambridge University from 1931 - 1938.
