Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec´s life was brief, violent but brilliantly productive. He abandoned the genteel setting of one of France´s noble, ancestral homes for the squalor de Montmatre music halls, circuses and brothels, which became the preferred subject of his art. His prodigious output of paintings, posters and litographs and his progressively more violent dissipations finally produced a stroke and death in 1901 at the age of thirty seven.
